Smugmug Review – Quick Video

This is an attempt to give a quick Smugmug review through a short video of Smugmug’s best features. Hope you like it!

Quick Smugmug Review

Smugmug’s most notable features that I like are:

  • Jaw-dropping display of my photos
  • Unlimited storage capacity & backup of my photos (including graphics, videos, and the RAW files)
  • Privacy Options (I can tell the search engines to ignore me; and, I can password-protect my galleries or my entire site)
  • I have a choice of 50 themes and have more than enough customization options for my site
  • I can share by making custom, easy-to-remember URLs, and I can share via Twitter or Facebook easily
  • Ease of uploading from Picasa and iPhone
  • Feeling of not alone; easily be a part of SmugMug User Group (SMUG)

You guessed it! It isn’t so easy to mention all of these things in a video and still keep it short, so I had to write about them to give you a better Smugmug Review. Smugmug Vs Flickr – Is there even a comparison?

Smugmug vs Flickr? Well, here’s what I think:

Photographs are priceless treasures of life’s best moments and we love sharing and preserving them. We print copies and frame or preserve them in an album. A much better option these days is to upload and share them on the web with our friends and family on the Internet photo-sharing sites. I have always loved cherishing memories of my past. Whenever I feel like creating another memory, I would always grab my digicam or my cell phone to capture those moments. I have had my own photo gallery on different online photo-sharing sites like Facebook, Flickr & now Smugmug. Facebook seems to be very limited in space and the features they provide to update or upgrade the albums on their site is also very limited.

Flickr Vs SmugmugI have loved creating my photo gallery on Flickr, which is Yahoo’s very popular photosharing site. I have set up my own profile and a great photo gallery, but I am not satisfied with the services or in other words, the system doesn’t appeal me anymore. Maybe because it’s free, Sorry I shouldn’t be complaining. On reviewing the online photosharing sites with my friends on the web, I was quite curious to know about Smugmug and its services.

Smugmug vs Flickr – What are the Differences?

Smugmug is basically more professional and much more organized than the services I had used in the past. It has a nominal fee which is worthier for the priceless memories I want to treasure. It has great features like tagging the pictures with keywords like names or places of my visit. These pictures can also be integrated with Google maps. There is a feature wherein we can assign separate themes for each gallery created. The best part is the unlimited space allotment with great picture quality for both Professionals and non professionals. Professionals can even have storage of 24MB per photo.

Smugmug vs Flickr reviewSmugmug offers great control and protection of the images; this great for anyone who expects more on the Internet. There is a feature of watermarking which helps to block image access above a certain size. I loved the keyword tagging feature which means I don’t have to run down through my galleries to pick up the photos I need at that moment. The system will automatically sort it and present it. Also, the image sizing feature, i.e. resizing the photograph to any size you need on your URL, is quite smart. Flickr is a closed system and the process of finding images is more trivial. Also, the biggest compliance is that they don’t have a restriction to accessing the original files. There is no inbuilt watermarking facility either.

Which to Use – Smugmug vs Flickr?

Based on these factors comparing Smugmug Vs Flickr, I feel Smugmug is much more organized and systematic than Flickr in terms of storage, protection, features & much more. Flickr may not be so good for professional photography businesses, but for an avid photographer, they have come long way in offering great features like, unlimited storage, unlimited set & collections, access to original files, stats on the account, HD playback of HD videos uploaded, and ad-free browsing & display of photos. So, for many the $48 for 2 year Flickr Pro account very worthwhile. They also offer a $25 plan for 1 year. Now, the comparison in Smugmug vs Flickr is down to your intended use, meaning, if you want to sell photos and showcase your photography business, go with Smugmug, but if you want all those features w/o the need for a photography business site, Flickr’s price is unbeatable.

Zenfolio vs Smugmug Review – Which Stands Out for Professional Use?

This Zenfolio vs Smugmug review helps you cut through the fluff and compare a few features that most professional photographers and photography business owners would value.  You can then make your own decision between Zenfolio and Smugmug. All our feature comparisons here will be between Zenfolio’s Premium account and Smugmug’s Professional account. Let’s begin!

Zenfolio vs SmugmugSmugmug vs Zenfolio

What does a professional photographer value? Well, every photographer is different, but most professional photographers and photography business owners value:

  1. Making First Impressions,
  2. Quality of Prints, and
  3. Customer Service.

All of these help create buzz and word-of-mouth marketing, usually touted as the best types of free marketing/publicity. These can at times lead to even more free publicity if covered by news media (offline and online) and magazines (physical and online).

Making First Impressions

First impressions can be made either by your website or by your customers showing off their photos, which falls into the Quality of Prints feature. Let’s focus our attention on examples of first impressions that Smugmug or Zenfolio can help create. Which one of the example sites below makes a good and memorable impression on you? If you have a hard time deciding, let me mention that a photo-sharing hosting service with more flexibility and options in customizations has the potential for demonstrating our creativity.

Examples of professional photography sites hosted by Zenfolio (on the left; see more here) and Smugmug (on the right; see more here):

Quality of Prints – Zenfolio Vs Smugmug

Now, let’s consider Quality of Prints. A great impression can only be achieved if you demonstrate your skill as a photographer and then show or deliver excellent quality digital photos or physical prints. Here’s a really useful comparison of Photo Labs recently done by Smugmug.  Smugmug allows use of these two photo labs: Bay Photo and EZ Prints; whereas, Zenfolio allows the use of Mpix Lab and Photobox.  To decide which one suits your needs for quality and price, please learn more about them at the respective Smugmug or Zenfolio sites.

Customer Service

Customer Service makes or breaks a thriving business. Not only do your customers expect great customer service but so do you from your online photo-sharing hosting service. Several online forums and discussions have hinted that Smugmug has the edge in providing awesome customer support to you as the customer. I’ve heard similar things about Zenfolio as well. What you offer to your customers is obviously up to you and your staff.

However, this review presents a comparison of a few very useful and valuable features offered by both these services.  A complete listing of what these two services offer can be found at their respective sites at zenfolio.com and smugmug.com.  I urge you to visit these sites before making a final decision since what you read on other sites (including this site) might soon be outdated by the time you read this. Smugmug and Zenfolio are always striving to get your business with all the updates to their offerings and added partnerships for related services to win your business.

So, which photo-sharing service, Zenfolio vs Smugmug, stands out for Professional Photographers? If you are happy with the customization features that Zenfolio offers, then go for Zenfolio Premium as it’s about $50 cheaper; but, if you prefer a wide array of site themes, great customer service, and expanding feature-set that keeps up with the times, then go for Smugmug (don’t forget to use the OYSDISCOUNT coupon code to save 20%).

Smugmug Review – What is Smugmug?

Smugmug is claimed by many as the best in online photography; it is not just a self-professed claim by the folks who own, built or now run Smugmug, but also by amateur and professional photographers who have an online presence or business. In this article, I will share some really unique features about Smugmug, without mentioning again that you can try out Smugmug free for 14 days.

What is Smugmug and who are the Owners of Smugmug, Inc.?
Smugmug.com reviewSmugmug, Inc. is a family-run business dedicated to easy, beautiful, ad-free photo-sharing. SmugMug was started in the internet bubble-burst era of 2002 by CEO Don MacAskill who recruited his father to join him in his passion for photography and to create a very unique online photo-sharing website. Along the way the contagion spread to the rest of the family. They left their promising careers and two SmugMug MacAskills became seven, solving the Silicon Valley problem of not enough time for family. After growing and hiring more staff, the rest of the SmugMug team became family too, keeping it a close-knit family of photography enthusiasts. It’s also important to note that this company turned profitable in 2005, and now it’s debt-free.

Why are these details about Smugmug important?
Firstly, the company is run by photographers. Who else would you trust to “get” online digital photography and roll out features that photographers really desire? Secondly, you don’t want to share and store your precious memories on sites that you think and hope will be around for years simply because they are backed by big names and brands, even when you know nothing about their photography business’ model. Who is to say that those free sites really make money or enough money that their big-pocket owners won’t cut features and support just to keep it alive, let alone, profitable. Many of the best businesses that offer some of the best features, services and support to their clients are those that are profitable. In addition, a debt-free company can not only offer superior features and support but also stay competitive and ahead of the curve in their field.
